This vs. That: Sweet and Savoury Snacks

It is a widely known idea that different people prefer different things. This also applied when looking at the world of snacks. There are those with an incessant sweet tooth, always craving sweet, and those who prefer savoury, craving saltiness and flavour. If you have ever wondered if one craving is better than the other, today is your lucky day!

There are studies that show that people often crave sweet snacks when they have a drop in blood sugar, meaning that some amount of sugar can be good for the body in that moment to balance out blood sugar levels. However, many sweet snacks, like candy, are extremely high in sugar and not very nutritious, meaning they do not provide any long term benefits and can lead to diseases such as obesity.

Scientists believe that we crave salty snacks when we are deficient in minerals or when we are dehydrated. This means that eating a salty snack when the craving hits can help balance the minerals and help us rehydrate. Many salty snacks can be very high in carbohydrates and calories, which can be very unhealthy.

However, it is important to remember that the health benefits vary depending on what the snack actually is, as there are many healthy and unhealthy choices for both sweet and savoury cravings!
